Wright Medical buys foot, ankle implant

Wright Medical Group, Inc. has acquired a foot and ankle implant from Metasurg in a $2.5 million deal.

That amount is an initial cash payment and other payments could come based on future financial performance of the implant. Metasurg's Bio-Arch subtalar implant is used in the minimally invasive surgical treatment of flat foot deformity. Metasurg is based in Houston.

"The flat foot is a progressive deformity that, left untreated, can lead to debilitating pain in addition to formation of bunions, hammertoes and plantar fascitis," said Thomas Redko, a Petaluma, Calif. foot and ankle surgeon, in a statement.

The acquisition is a move to build Wright's (NYSE: WMGI) foot and ankle treatment portfolio, according to John T. Treace, vice president of marketing for Wright's biologic and extremity products.

The Bio-Arch implant is a key addition to Wright's foot and ankle procedures, which includes Cancello-Pure Bone Wedges, A.M. Surgical's Endoscopic Soft Tissue Release System, and Darco Locked Reconstructive Plates, he said.
