Memphis Business Journal
July 22, 2008

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital has been awarded a $378,000 grant from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to support blood disease research.

The NHLBI is a division of the Department of Health and Human Services. The grant will support the work of Russell E. Ware, St. Jude's chair of the department of hematology and the Lemuel Diggs Endowed Chair in Sickle Cell Disease. The funds will be used to study hydroxyurea, a drug used to reduce the rate of painful attacks in sickle-cell disease patients.

In a statement, Congressman Steve Cohen said this is the second government grant Ware has received to work on sickle cell disease.
